Type: Granite Soldier Statue
Description:
A Granite soldier statue, with the soldier at parade rest, is mounted on a square granite column. Around the top of the column are carved emblems representing the GAR Badge, soldiers accoutrements, crossed swords with a victory wreath, and crossed rifles.
Inscribed on the column are "Dedicated May 30, 1923".
"Erected In Honor Of ~ The Defenders Of ~ The Union
1861-1865 ~ By The Patriotic ~ Citizens Of ~ Beloit And
Community ~ Under The Auspices ~ Of The ~ Womans Relief
Corps ~ No. 52 Dept. Of Kansas ~ Auxiliary To The ~
Grand Army Of The Republic".
"Fraternity ~ Charity ~ Loyalty".
Granite plaques, mounted in front of the statue are
engraved: "Yonder Stands The Bulwark ~ Of The Nation, The
Private Soldier ~ He Was The Sunshine And The Heart ~ Of
The Cause He Loved And He Saved ~ His Country. Forget Him
Not ~ R.D.Heath Commander ~ G.A.R. Post 147 Beloit ~ May
30, 1913".
"Soldier's Square Memorial ~ Dedicated May 30, 1913 ~
Constructed ~ Under The Auspices Of ~ Beloit W.R.C. # 52
